Azizah Nur Hapsari

Azizah Nur Hapsari (Sari) possesses over 12 years of experience advocating for human rights and environmental issues, with a focus on the fishery and forestry sectors. In her last role as Senior Campaigner/Project Coordinator at Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), she led the Indonesia team, devising campaign and advocacy strategies and serving as EJF’s focal point for Indonesia (similar role as country coordinator). Her expertises encompasses advocacy, research and investigative work addressing challenges like illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUUF) as well as human rights abuses at sea. Additionally, she has actively engaged with issues pertaining to deforestation, food and land use, and the rights of indigenous communities. She was responsible for generating briefings, vessel alerts, and observatory reports on law enforcement at sea. 

Sari co-authored EJF projects in Indonesia, addressing journalist capacity, fair recruitment for fishers, and improved inspection at sea and ports. She extensively travelled across key Indonesian islands to document forced labour and IUU fishing. Before EJF, she worked with the Indonesian government, an intergovernmental organisation for Southeast Asia, and a local NGO.

Sari earned her double master’s degree in Spatial Planning and Environmental Policy from Cardiff University, UK, and Radboud University of Nijmegen, Netherlands, in 2015.
